![]() ![]() Many developers and publishers are making a strong case for such things now more than ever, and that would make a great change in an industry fans hold so dear. While it isn't known if character creation will impact the game and the world around or not, the ability to express oneself is a great decision on the developer's part. From the looks of things, it seems like there's still some time until it becomes the industry standard though. Not many games have made explicitly queer characters as protagonists with a notable exception of character such as Life is Strange's Chloe. However, the scenario keeps changing with times, and it does look that things will be better in the future. There has been more transgender-friendly character creation recently, such as with Demon's Souls, and hopefully it keeps moving forward. But Hogwarts Legacy should not receive a free pass by those desperate to find some way to justify their purchase despite Rowling’s bigotry.Inclusivity in video games has been heavily talked about for a very long time, yet many developers still refrain from including transgender characters and non-male protagonists. I’m happy for the queer and POC folks who have seen this character creator and realised the potential to piece together a representation of who they are. ![]() Yet we cheer for it regardless, which was the intention all along. It is performative activism, a move that appears to take a step forward in the medium yet beneath the surface makes no real effort to achieve anything. Hair types, skin tones, facial options, and the smallest of details have been hailed as inclusive and a bold step forward, a bafflingly obtuse declaration given how Harry Potter and transphobia are now forever intertwined. ![]() Putting that aside, appearance and how exactly that might be viewed from a gendered view is all up to the player. On a technical level it is incredibly impressive, and your gender is only ever indicated by whether you decide to enrol as either a Witch or a Wizard. Journalists and influencers started many of their previews with ample love for Hogwarts Legacy and its character creator. ![]()
